PERSPECTIVE
Is a Cure Just Around the Corner?
Pardon us while we laugh
Every now and then, especially during the holidays when I'm feeling particularly crabby toward big business and crass commercialization, I get to thinking: they'll build condos on Jupiter before they find a cure for dementia-related illnesses.
Why?
1. It’s a disease that involves old people.
2. We, as a society, don't really like old people despite what we like to say.
3. Old scares us because after old is death and that really scares us.
4. Old age is a big business, employing lots of people, feeding lots of families, gassing up lots of cars and sending lots of kids to college.
5. Old age is a big business that’s getting bigger by the minute.
6. Old age is today's golden goose.
7. We don’t kill golden geese.
And now we return to our regularly scheduled program.
